MEDIA
A Level
BTEC Creative Media
Subject Information
The media industry is one of the largest and most varied industries in the world with a huge diversity of employment opportunities. Many of our students have gone on to follow careers in journalism, TV, film and radio (or sound) production are popular routes into higher education as is the technology behind games design and animation. A GCSE in Media Studies is not compulsory.
With a qualification level in Media you can progress to undergraduate courses in film, media, visual culture and humanities using the analytical, research and production skills that you will develop on the course. Many students pursue careers in media production, journalism, advertising, marketing, the games industry and sound technology.
The BTEC in Creative Media course will balance practical skill development together with some units which are theoretical in nature. You will use a range of resources, including digital SLR cameras, HD video cameras, editing software and Mac computer suites.

I have always had a passion for media and my media course at college really helped me develop an understanding of creative industries and gave me experience of editing productions. My university course allowed me to further hone my skills and I gained a lot of experience presenting for the university radio station Spark FM.
I gained employment after university writing web content for BIM Crunch. I have recently moved to London as I secured a job working for the Official Charts Company. I was shocked to hear that over 200 people applied for the job. It's been a whirlwind experience but I'm already getting work published so it's awesome! I also met and filmed Justin Bieber on Tuesday!

I’m in the middle of making my graduate project. It’s basically the last big project I do at uni - because our course is so broad we were given the freedom of making pretty much whatever we wanted (as long as it fit the brief requirements). Since about halfway through my second year I’ve took interest in web development and design, so I’ve decided to make an interactive web documentary on sugar, which sounds random, but it’s quite a hot topic at the minute and is frequently in the news.
I’m so glad that I chose Media Production now and decided to go to university. I remember filling out my application for UCAS thinking ‘I’m not sure if this is for me’ but since then it’s probably been the best, and most fun decision of my life. I’ve made some great friends and done some really nice work that I’m proud of (below is a project you can watch that my production group and I got 75% - it was for a live client that temporarily got put on their website which was a really proud moment!
