A-Level
Subject Information
The A-level in Film Studies is designed to extend students' understanding of all aspect of Film, initially US and British films but eventually global films.
Initially you will be introduced to the key concepts of film including genre, audiences and film language. The coursework element requires you to analsye a sequence of your choice from a film of your choice and the creative project encourages students to be creative and challenges them to create a digital storyboard, extended step outline or a short film.
There are opportunities to study various genres including horror films, film movements like French New Wave, Surrealism and various international cinema. In the second year of the course students are introduced to a range of auteurs, in the past students have examined Pedro Almodovar, Guillermo Del Toro and David Lynch.
Student Profile
Matthew started the Film Studies course in September 2013 with a clear desire to study the subject at university. He graduated from Hartlepool Sixth Form College in September 2015 and accept a place on the Media and Film Production course at Staffordshire University.

Short Film - Matthew Appleyard - Bench
Bench was Matthew's Film Studies coursework which was entered into the Royal Television Society competiton held at Sunderland university. The film was the winner of Best Drama category. This showcase event for young filmmakers has been running in the region for more than two decades and has proved an important stepping stone for would-be producers and directors aged from 5 to 19.
